English. c1950. ‘The Demon@ Beetle Trap. ‘The most popular trap in the world and the most effective trap in the world’. Large red sticker on the back proclaiming the details. Mainly indoor use for cockroaches. Introduced in 1887 by manufacturers known for their jelly moulds! Originally had rough texture white paint to give the critters a grip. Mild steel with 4 rocker plates which tilt under the weight of the beetle. Hanging loop. 9 inches Dia. (22.5cms).
English. C1900. Rotary. Young boys often employed among crop. Ref AHT p17. Oak and beech. Stamped W.W.F.C which suggests football rattle. L 6.7 inches (17cms) x W 5.7 inches (14.5cms).
3 Slat construction. Mahogany. Centre slat often chestnut with deal flaps. Clac-clac or Claquoir for game driving. 10.5 inches (26.6cms).
English. Child’s working model. Children were widely employed to scare birds from seeded areas. The subimage shows an early image of bird scaring – a 15th century misericord from Ripple church in Worcestershire showing 2 boys scaring birds, one with a rattle and the other with a stick. French. Soufreuse conique. Bordeaux vineyard. Loudons Art of Gardening 1850 shows a similar shaped English predecessor. The ‘Lime Duster’ made of tinned iron. Zinc, brass rose, cork bung. 13.25 inches (34.5cms) x 5 inches (12.8cms).

British Patent Nos 470649 & 596465 Regd Design No 846723 Additional Patents Granted Throughout The World.” Green tin and sprung nozzle with brown canvas bellows. Made from stamped and pressed light gauge sheet steel with joints being rolled and lapped. The bellows are from rubberized canvas held in place with adhesive fabric tape.
The chemical insecticide/fungicide powder is poured into the canister by removing the screwed cap. The powder is released in a cloud onto the plant foliage by waggling the blower up and down – this activates the bellows. There is a leaf spring mounted between the handle and the canister which continually returns the blower to the open position while it is being operated. Ref Skeet & Jeffes Ltd Woking. Mid 20C. Pewter Bellows with sprung diaphragm and tiny hardwood press button. 4.4 inches (11cms).
English. Mid 20C. Richards Patent Fumigator. Near identical to Fumigator A but this model stamped ‘Richards XL ALL Fumigator’. The glass spirit lamp was used to heat product placed in the graduated cap. Dia 4.8 inches (12.2cms).
Early 20C. Steel blade with wood insert in upper blade and steel strapping with 3 rivets. Ash T-handle. 37.5 inches (96.3cms).

Early 20C. Emoussoir Fer or Gratte Ecorce. Steel blade with various segments on tanged steel rod. Chestnut handle and brass ferrule. Similar to Emoussoir Fer in Goldenberg’s catalogue. To remove moss and lichens which were thought to damage fruit trees. There were varied shaped blades offered. 10.3 inches (26.5cms).
French. Early 20C. Gratte-Ecorce or Moss Scraper. Triangular steel scraper on tanged steel rod. Ash handle with initials carved ‘A.M’. These Emoussoirs or gratte-ecorce (bark scraper) were used for removing moss and lichen from trees.Notably fruit trees. The sub-image shows an extract from the 1927 Goldenberg catalogue. 15.2 inches (38.5cms).
French. Early 1900’s. Triple profile triangular blade on rod with tanged fitting to wooden handle. Some worm. In French this is an ’emoussoir or gratte-ecorce’ (Bark Scraper’). Sold and illustrated by Goldenberg in catalogue of 1927. 16.3 inches (41.5cms).

English. C 1900. Beech wood. 32.5 inches (82.5cms) x 1.75 inches (4.2cms). Royles pattern. Stamped ‘Hodgkinson& Sons Makers Blackburn England’. Sold by George Harding in 1935 and by William Wood 1938. With ‘Cop’ of black cotton on paper mount. Normally sold with 2 Cops either black or white. Used to web around sticks to keep cats and birds off seed beds and in fruit trees. A near identical model by Royle was offered by Harrods catalogue in 1907.
J J Royle 14 Holborn Viaduct. Royle a prolific inventor is best known for a self-pouring teapot patented in 1886.
